A Year Of Card Techniques–Basic Card Folds

Bloghop Graphic

Welcome to A Year of Card Techniques Blog Hop where each month we feature a different card technique.  We’ve assembled a team of card makers who range from new to advanced, so you’ll see a great variety of cards and ideas.

June‘s hop is devoted to basic card folds; featuring drapery/curtain fold, peek-a-boo fold or double-z gate-fold.  And we’re adding a twist of using double-sided paper.   We hope this gives you lots of ideas and will inspire you to try these card folds yourself...and pull out that double-sided paper as well!    If you would like to check out our past technique hops, you can do that here:

Since I’m the first blog on this hop, let’s get started!

Draper Fold 1_cardfolds_ocmLet me just start by saying that this was my first attempt at the drapery fold and it’s definitely not my favorite one of the bunch.  I used a digital image that I had saved on my computer and colored it with Copics.  The paper is from a Recollections paper pad and it was the ONLY double sided paper pad that I owned.  I thought I had bunches of it but it turns out I don’t.  Enough said about this card.  Let’s move on, shall we.

Sending Lots Of Love_cardfolds_ocm

I decided to try and attempt another drapery fold with Card #2 and I’m much happier with the results.  Since I only had one double sided paper pad and I wasn’t very fond of the papers available in that pad, I decided that I needed to make a trip to Michaels where I picked up a pretty little 6x6-inch pad of double sided papers in various patterns of pink and gold.  I chosen a cute chevron pattern for this card but it does make it a little more difficult to see the folds.  I added a glitzy gold bow and a sentiment that I sponged the edges of to make it pop.

Next I tried the double drapery fold with some digital paper that I printed.  This was a little trickier but I think it turned out ok.  Next time I think I will try to make the folds wider so that you can see more of the other side of the paper.  I added a black ribbon and a “happy birthday” sentiment to finish the card off.

Elephant Peek-A-Boo_cardfolds_ocm

My last card is a peek-a-boo card.  It’s pretty simple to make.  Once again, I printed my paper with a different pattern on each side.  To make this card you measure up halfway on the long side and then cut in about 1.5-inches.  Then you fold each corner back to make the peek-a-boo.  I stamped a “My Favorite Things” Adorable Elephant image onto some cardstock and used my circle punch to cut him out.  I colored him with Prisma Color markers in Cool Grey 10%, Cool Gray 20%, and Cool Grey 30%.  I sponged the edges of my circle with some light blue ink.  I added a “happy birthday” sentiment to finish off the card.

As an extra special bonus, I am giving away some Basic Grey products (see below) to one very special person so make sure when you comment to mention the words BLOG CANDY!

Ok, that’s it for me.  I hope you enjoyed my cards.  Now  you’re off to visit with Claudia.  Don’t forget to leave a comment on each blog to increase your chances of winning.  Hope you had fun and thanks for stopping by.  See you next month with another technique!

Here’s the full line-up in case you get lost:

  1. The drapery fold was my least favorite as well, but you did a beautiful job on yours...not sure why you don't like the first one. Your peek-a-boo card is adorable. Fun hopping with you, as always

  6. I love your drapery fold cards. I tend to agree - not my favorite to make - but you did a great job. I really like how the pink and gold pattern just works with the folds.

  7. Cute drapery folds and very creative to print your own paper. I didn't have a problem finding double sided paper because I have a paper addiction (especially the 6 x 6 pads). The peek-a-boo is very cute too. And by the way - BLOG CANDY!

  8. Wonderful cards Sharon and I love how you were able to match the designs with the folds. I guess we had the same issues paper is important because not all designs work together and some of the folds are not my cup of tea either :-) You did a great job and thanks for sharing these with us
